Following is a diary that Argentine volleyball player Gonzalo Quirogay, a 17-year-old boy, wrote on Monday, after his first activity of the cultural and education program held in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games.

All athletes are engaged in more than 50 cultural and education programs that stress the Olympic value of excellence, friendship and respect.

Monday, August 16th

Well we got up at 8 o'clock in the morning today, feeling a great day was coming... When we got on the bus, all of us were very excited about training and making some new friends in afternoon's activity.

But we didn't start the day in the way we wanted, because a guy of us forgot his accreditation card in the room, so he had to return and he didn't have breakfast unfortunately.

After having breakfast with some sandwiches and cereals, we came down through a lot of stairs on the way to the transport mall, and then took a shuttle bus to the training court.

Burning with the sunshine, we knew that another hot and humid day was coming.

We trained for one and half an hours, but all of us were so happy about the practice we have done. We always learn a lot through training.

We came back to the village at around 13 o'clock. After taking a relaxing shower, we went for lunch.

Our coach told us yesterday that we would take part in an activity this afternoon. We are all looking forward to it. The activity was in the beautiful Marina Bay, where the opening ceremony was held. Some athletes from Ukraine and Singapore were also engaged in the activity.

I joined in a model ship race. It was my first time to play model ship. I found difficulty in controlling the ship's direction, so I lost my race to a Ukrainian girl. (What a Shame!) Then I encountered a technology exhibition, in which I was showed how to purify rain water into drinking water. It was really amazing!

The whole activity lasted two hours. After that, we all got on a double bus and had a nice tour in the downtown of Singapore. I took lots of photos with my teammates and the guys from Ukraine and Singapore.

Finally it was time to go back again to the village. I felt a bit tired. Our volleyball competition will run from 21st to 26th. Our first two opponents are Iran and Cuba. My team ranked the third in last year's Volleyball Youth Championship; hopefully, we could have a better result in the upcoming games.
