Two German handball referees received five-year bans by the sport's European governing body for their involvement in an alleged match-fixing scandal.
According to the Vienna-based European Handball Federations on Thursday, Frank Lemme and Bernd Ullrich were also excluded from refereeing and any other activity related to international handball competitions.
The duo officiated the 2006 Men's Winners Cup final between Russia's Chehovski Medvedi and BM Valladolid of Spain, with the Russians winning the two-game series by one goal.
After the match, Russian custom officials in Moscow found 50,000 U.S. dollars in cash in one of the referees' luggage.
EHF also excluded Chehovski Medvedi from international competitions for two years for not cooperating enough in solving the match-fixing case.
The referees and Chehovski Medvedi can appeal their bans at EHF's court of arbitration within three weeks. Source:Xinhua
