Chinese Taipei aims to better Athens' performance at Beijing Olympics
22:00, August 06, 2008

Chinese Taipei's chef de mission Tsai Chen-wei said in Beijing on Wednesday that his side will try to make breakthrough at the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

"We will not only repeat the glory in Athens, that's not enough," said Cai after the flag-raising ceremony in the Olympic village.

Cai said that Chinese Taipei has 80 athletes here, one of the biggest delegation they have had at the Olympics, and looks to better the results of two gold medals in Athens four years ago.

Among them, Yang Shu-chun, gold medalist at the 2008 Asian Taekwondo Championships, is tipped to play a leading role in the women's 49kg class.

The 23-year-old Yang must fight off tough challenge hot favorite Wu Jingyu of China to win.

"The competition could be very fierce as they are in the same level, " Tsai said.

In Athens, Chinese Taipei put an end to their gold drough in Olympic history, winning two gold medals from taekwondo. They also won two silvers and a bronze.

Hsin Chen Chih took the first gold in the women's 49kg category and 20 minutes later, Chu Mu Yen came on the mat and took a second in the men's 58kg division.

Tsai was also confident of their baseball team, which won a silver at the 1992 Barcelona Games.

"We have many talented baseball players," he said. "Though the Americans and Japanese are very strong, I believe we could reach the semifinals." Enditem
