More than 30 Australian sports fans said on Monday they have been duped out of nearly 100,000 Australian dollars in an online Olympic ticketing scam in recent days.
At least 33 victims from Australia reported to have lost a total of 96,900 Australian dollars after buying tickets to the games on the US-based website beijingticketing.com.
A spokeswoman for New South Wales Fair Trading Minister Linda Burney said these victims phoned the department on Monday after a national hotline was set up.
A man from the state of Queensland reportedly lost 46,000 dollars in the scam.
"We're anxious for the website to be pulled down as quickly as possible and our officials have talked to the ACCC in the expectation that they'll be liaising with the International Consumer Protection Enforcement Network (ICPEN), a network of 24 countries represented," Australian Associated Press quoted the spokeswoman as saying in Sydney, the state capital of NSW.
She said information from the hotline would be passed on to the ACCC which would represent Australia on the ICPEN.
Olympic officials are expected to ask a judge in California Monday to shut down the seller accused of scamming Australian, U.S.and European sports fans and travel agents out of tens of thousands of dollars. Source: Xinhua |
