Beijing Olympic torch relay in Kaifeng concludes
12:34, July 26, 2008

Zhang Wu, designer of the Beijing Olympic Emblem Chinese Seal, lit the cauldron at the Kaifeng Dongjing Art Center at 10 a.m. on Saturday, bringing an end to the Olympic torch relay in the Kaifeng City of central China's Henan Province.

Kaifeng, the capital of seven Chinese dynasties and home to five million, was the second stop of the sacred flame's 4-day leg in Henan, the country's most populous province. The torch toured the province on Friday with altogether 208 torchbearers.

"The torch relay, which proved successful, has given a full display of Kaifeng's long history and abundant culture," said Zhou Yizhong, mayor of the city, at a grand ceremony after the relay.

The torch will leave for the next relay in Luoyang, China's "city of peonies", which boasts the magnificent Longmen Buddhist Caves and the country's oldest Buddhist temple.
