Songyuan upsets Vanguard 8-2 in men's ice hockey at Winter Games

Songyuan, which beat Beijing 3-1 on Saturday, triumphed Vanguard 8-2 in men's ice hockey tournament at the 11th National Winter Games to finish fourth here on Sunday.

"We did a good a job," said Liu Jiuming, head coach of Songyuan. "I am quite satisfied with our performance today."

After a goalless first period, Songyuan opened the scoring in 2:14 of the second period by a power-play shot, and soon took a 3-0 lead. Vanguard tried hard to respond and score one goal in 16:48. Songyuan added two more in the last three minutes of the period.

The third period saw Vanguard scored one goal, while Songyuan collected three.

Vanguard finished sixth in the fourth-to-sixth places round robin as they lost to Beijing 9-5 on Friday. Beijing took the fifth place.
