Cuba's highest ranked chess grandmaster (GM) Leinier Dominguez on Tuesday reached his best ever Elo rating - 2,691, moving one place up to 29th.

Russian GM Vladimir Kramnik and world champion Viswanathan Anand of India share the first place in FIDE's 2008 Elo ratings with 2,799 points each, 19 more than third-placed Bulgarian Veselin Topalov.

In ratings by teams, Russia heads FIDE's Elo list with 2,721 points followed by Cuba with 2,561.

The Elo rating is a mathematical rating system now used worldwide to rank world class chess players and it was adopted by the FIDE in 1970.

This rating system was invented by Hungarian Arpad Elo, who wasborn in 1903 and died in 1992.
