Turkey defeat Austria for second place in Euro qualifiers

Turkey defeated Austria 2-0 in the Euro2012 Group A qualifiers here on Tuesday night.

Arda Turan struck the first goal on the 28th minute in the first half, and the second goal came in the 77th minute by Gokhan Gonul.

The Turkish side started the match strong, with a shot by Burak Yilmaz bouncing off the post three minutes into the game and Arda Hamit's strike three minutes later being blocked by the goalkeeper.

Austria's first serious attack flew over the goal in the 22nd minute.

After the first goal of the match by Turan, the Austrian side stepped up its possession, but the game entered half-time interval with the score unchanged.

Turkey again started the second half on the offense, with strikes at in the 51st and 58th minute missing the goal.

After the 60th minute, the Turkish side became cautious as the Austrian team took to the offensive and even got a free kick at 69th, which was blocked.

But the goal at 77th minute put Turkey in a comfortable lead, and with Austria's penalty at 83rd blocked, the hosts managed to end the game 2-0.

Turkey ranked second with 9 points after the victory, 6 points behind the leaders Germany. Belgium and Austria are tied for 3rd place in the group with 7 points.
