One of the top officials of the Indian Air Force has slammed the country's politicians of making a "royal mess" of India's defense, saying bureaucratic red tape and inefficiency have been jeopardizing military preparedness.

"The Government clears something, the Opposition immediately says no. When they change roles, the same thing happens. That impinges very badly on India's defense," Vice-Chief of Air Staff P.K. Barbora said.

Barbora criticized inefficient public sector undertakings of the country which he felt were a set back for India's military preparedness.

The vice-chief also rapped India's policy of purchasing of foreign weapons saying "we go for outright direct purchase, and the seller is very happy".

Barbora had earlier got into a controversy by terming servicewomen a "liability" for the military.
