Kenya's Catherine Ndereba pulled away with two kilometes to go from China's London marathon winner Zhou Chunxiu to cature her second world title in four years at the world athletics championships here on Sunday.
Ndereba finished the 42.195km race in two hours 30 minutes and 37 seconds. Zhou, this year's fastest marathoner with 2:20:38, took the silver in 2:30:50.
Japan's Reiko Tosa won the bronze in 2:30:55.
The 35-year-old Ndereba has won eight in 16 marathons, including the prestigious Boston and Chicago races in both 2000 and 2001, before winning the 2003 world championships.
She was also the silver medalist in both the Athens Olympic Games and the last world championships in Helsinki two years ago.
Zhou has been regarded a favorite since surprising a strong field to win the London marathon last April. The 28-year-old was fifth in the last worlds and was a distant 33rd in the Athens Olympics.
