Ugandan runner Justine Bayiga has earned a special invitation to make her debut at the World Athletics Championships slated for Osaka, Japan August 25 to September 2.
Bayiga, whose personal best of 52.79 seconds in the 400m was 0.39 seconds off the 52.40 qualifying mark, was invited to take part in the world event after the only female of the team, Dorcus Inzikuru, pulled out for pregnancy.
"It is not a wild card as such. IAAF rules require that each country be represented by at least a male and female athlete in IAAF events. Since we had no female qualifier, we selected Bayiga because of her current form," explained local athletics federation secretary Beatrice Ayikoru.
Uganda will field nine athletes. The others are Abraham Chepkirwok (800m), Benjamin Kiplagat (3000m steeplechase), Moses Kipsiro and Stephen Kiprotich (5000m), Wilson Busienei and Boniface Kiprop (10000m) and Alex Malinga and Amos Masai (marathon).
