These disciplines were given financial assistance by ZOC through the US$80 000 grant that the organisation received from the Olympic Solidarity for the development of local athletes and teams picked for this year''s All-Africa Games.
Initially, ZOC had identified five disciplines, athletics, cycling, swimming, shooting and tennis, as the beneficiaries of the funds from the Olympic Solidarity. But Mutsauki said when the Zimbabwe team for the Algiers Games was eventually announced by the Sport and Recreation Commission in May, they decided to include seven more disciplines onto the Olympic Solidarity funding programme. He said this was all part of their efforts to see that Zimbabwean athletes were fully prepared for the All-Africa Games. Mutsauki said they were also hoping that the combination of funding the preparations of the 12 Olympic sporting disciplines and the covering of the travel costs of the overseas-based athletes, who are on the Olympic Solidarity scholarship programme, will enable Zimbabwe to harvest a significant number of medals in Algiers. Team Zimbabwe is expected to travel to Algiers on Saturday via Johannesburg and Rome, Italy.
