Tianjin, a major city in northern China, may be chosen as the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum's first low-carbon model city, said Japan's Trade Minister Masayuki Naoshima on June 19.

After a joint meeting of energy ministers concluded, APEC released a statement that the forum will also seek to cooperate on financing new nuclear plants as the region adds reactors to meet rising power demand without emitting more carbon dioxide or importing additional oil.

The 21-member body will set up a task force to choose cities for the Low-Carbon Model Town Project, and will consider a proposal by China for Tianjin, Naoshima said.
