China Automotive Trading Co, the nation's largest auto importer, said in recent reports that imported vehicles registered in 2010 will exceed 650,000 units, an 80 percent surge over 2009.

The reports said SUVs accounted for more than half of imported car sales in the first 10 months of 2010. Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus ranked as the top three brands in imported car sales.

The company estimated the number of registered imported vehicles will increase 20 percent to 800,000 units in 2011, a much slower pace than 2010, but still higher than projected growth in sales of locally produced cars.
