The New York-based World Brand Lab published the world’s top 500 brand names list for 2010 on December 22, including 17 brands in China's mainland. The People’s Daily rises to 411th from 430th last year.

Another Chinese media name on the list is CCTV, the state broadcaster.

The assessment is based on the evaluation of brand influence, share of market, brand loyalty and global leadership selected from more than 8,000 brand candidates from 33 countries. Facebook tops the list.

With 37 names on the list, the mass media still dominates the list. It is followed by the food and beverage with 32 brands.

The United States holds 237 brands on the list, much more than any other country in the world. The second, France, has 47 brands, followed by Japan and Britain.
