Baidu swallows additional Google market share

Chinese search engine giant Baidu has grabbed a bigger slice of the country's search-engine market in the third quarter as it continues to push out Google, according to data released Wednesday.

Baidu's predominant position will continue in the near term, while new search engines foraying into the market are expected to make the competition fiercer, analysts said.

In the third quarter, Baidu's share by revenue jumped 1.9 percentage points to a record high of 72.9 percent, according to Internet market research firm iResearch. Rival Google's share dropped 2.7 points to 24.6 in the same period.

Research firm Analysys International also released data Wednesday showing the same results.

Five short years ago, Baidu had only a 25 percent share following Yahoo, but to date, that number has now grown by nearly 50 percentage points.

Baidu's increased share is partly thanks to China's rapidly growing search engine market, said Li Zhi, an analyst with research firm.

The domestic Chinese search engine market grew 58.9 percent from a year earlier to total 3.13 billion yuan ($470.43 million) in the third quarter, according to the figures.

Baidu's growing public acceptance has made it possible for it to take a bite out of its rivals, Li said.

Google has been losing share after shifting its service from the mainland to Hong Kong giving an opportunity to Baidu. The same thing happend when Yahoo pulled out in 2005, Li said.

A senior official from Baidu said Tuesday at a technology conference that rival Google's reduced presence in China has probably benefited the company, AFP reported Wednesday.

Google announced it ended deals with several advertising agencies in the country last month, which Li believes has likely impacted Google's advertising services.

The issue is likely to slow Google's revenue growth further in the next two quarters, said Jin Naili, an analyst with iResearch.

While Baidu's dominant position would continue, smaller and new rivals are expected to make the market more diversified, Jin said.

Alibaba, China's largest e-commerce firm, has recently launched rival search engine - Etao - in partnership with Microsoft. Other new sector players are expected challenge Baidu's position as a comprehensive search engine in the foreseeable future, Analysys' Li said.
