BMW China will recall 5,300 of the imported BMW 5 series GT cars in China starting Friday due to defective fuel tank, China's quality inspection authorities said on Aug. 17.

The recall involves BMW 5 series 535i and 550i cars made from Jan. 12 to June 30 this year.

The fuel tank problem could stall the engine without warning and the engine might not restart afterward, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) said in a statement on its Web site.

BMW China said it would offer free replacement of oil level sensors for car owners affected to avoid possible risks and not deliver the cars involved until the defects are fixed.

Earlier on July 21, BMW recalled nearly 6,100 5 series models because of the same fuel tank problem. BMW China did not explain why the recall was launched nearly one month later than the U.S.

BMW owners in China have complained of BMW China's slow response.

"I'm a BMW owner. BMW started to recall the 5 series in the U.S. today, but why not in China? Does it mean that BMW cars exported to China are of better quality?" said a driver on qiche365.org.cn, a Web site focused on auto recalls.
