A local court in Shanghai ruled that Dazhong Insurance must pay nearly 2.2 million yuan (around 320,000 U.S. dollars) in damages to the Microsoft Corporation for software piracy.
This marks Microsoft's first successful lawsuit against a large enterprise in China, and it is largest amount ever awarded in an intellectual property suit in China. Microsoft noted that they wanted to promote the use of genuine software for large companies.
Evidence used in court showed that Dazhong Insurance at used at least 450 copies of pirated software and violated software piracy laws in nine categories. Microsoft demands that Dazhong Insurance should halt the use of pirated software.
