Preliminary design of China's jumbo jet program will be launched in 2010, said the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) at a press conference March 2.

The preliminary design of the jumbo jet includes load wind tunnel tests, finalizing the engineering prototype of the jet's nose section and signing memorandums of understanding with suppliers.

China's "jumbo jet" program, started in 2008, aims at an independently developed large passenger aircraft. Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (Comac), maker of the jumbo jet, completed its preliminary design proposal and submitted a feasibility report in 2009.

The initial jumbo jet will be a single-aisle jet with two engines. It has a designed capacity of 168 seats for the full economy class version and 156 seats for mixed class version.

C-919 jumbo jet will consume 12 to 15 percent less fuel than similar aircraft and will be quieter than the maximum noise level stipulated by International Civil Aviation Regulations and airworthiness standards.
