3G users in China number 13.25 mln

Zhang Feng, director of the Department of Communications Development under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said January 27, that by the end of 2009, the number of 3G users had reached 13.25 million nationwide, and the number of users of TD-SCDMA, which China owns the intellectual property rights for, had reached 5.1 million.

Zhang said that in 2009, the 3 largest telecom operators directly injected 161 billion yuan to complete the 3G network, and 325,000 3G base stations were built. According to calculations, nearly 589 billion yuan of indirect investments were generated by 3G for the entire 2009 year. 3G also brought direct and indirect consumption worth 36.4 billion yuan and 14.1 billion yuan respectively. Thanks to 3G, the GDP saw a direct and indirect growth of 34.3 billion yuan and 141.3 billion yuan respectively, and 260,000 jobs and 670,000 jobs were created directly and indirectly.
