China builds world's largest Internet infrastructure

According to the "2009 China Internet Conference" China has built the world's largest Internet infrastructure, which covers almost all cities, 95.6% towns are connected to broadband, 99% villages can access to the Internet.

Han Xia, chief manager of Telecommunication Department of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), suggests that Chinese web user numbers rose to 360 million, coverage reached 27.1% in the first three quarters. Resources relying on Internet have been expanding, with nearly 123 million IP addresses the world's second, CN domain registration is up to 5 million, ranked the first in the world.

In 2008, the total assets of Chinese Internet industry reached 150 billion RMB, with 80% of the profits coming from online gaming, online advertising and e-commerce.

The Internet industry creates many job opportunities for the unemployed. In 2008, there were 557,000 people working in this field. It absorbs over 10 million surplus workers.

In the area of government management and public services, 98.5% local government and over 95% central government have their own websites.

On a daily basis, there are 260 million people reading news online, 240 million people communicating through instant messengers, 76 million people paying for services online, 360 million see the Internet as an efficient way to buy or sell stock.

Li Yizhong, head of Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said China will emphasize on the following four areas. First, it will focus on the next-generation Internet network and develop 3G techniques. Second, China will combine three networks together, enhance the combination of broadcasting and telecommunication networks, and promote IPTV and mobile TV. Third, China will try to boost the economy by developing information technology and industrialization. Fourth, China will closely monitor the Internet and strengthen security management and create a healthy and friendly Internet environment.
