Minister: China's Internet users reaches 338 million

China Internet Conference 2009 opened at Beijing International Convention Center this morning. The Conference was advised by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China, hosted by Internet Society of China, and sponsored by Organizing Committee of China Internet Conference. It will last from November 2 to 3. The theme of the conference was 'from crisis to opportunity – the strength and confidence of Internet in China under the financial crisis'.

Li Yizhong, minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), pointed out at the opening ceremony of the Conference that the Internet, in the process of developing applications showed the following trends and characteristics: First, the scale of Internet users further expanded. China's Internet users reached 338 million and mobile phone Internet users reached 155 million; the Internet deepened penetration in other fields, which derived and induced the new industry and new economic growth points; Third, e-commerce continued to maintain rapid development, penetration rate continued to rise, services were expanding; Fourth, the mobile Internet accelerated the development, promoted a new economic model and growth points.

Hu Qiheng, chairman of Internet Society of China, said at the opening ceremony that 2009 was the 60th anniversary of founding of New China, which was also the year China's economy and information technology would face the challenges from the global financial crisis. However, China's Internet industry maintained fast and sound development momentum, the scale of the industry continued to grow, the number of Internet users increased, and the applicable innovation faced a new development opportunity.

Li Wufeng, director-general of Internet Bureau of State Council Information Office, stated that he affirmed the positive role of China's Internet in economic construction and supervision by public opinion, and hoped that Internet Society of China would continue to carry forward the role of a bridge linking and improving the healthy development of China's Internet industry through the self-regulatory approach of the industry.
