Chinese shares close 0.17% lower at midday Thursday

Chinese shares closed slightly lower in the morning session Thursday, extending Wednesday's sharp declines that dragged the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index below 2,900 mark. 8 The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index lost 4.92 points, or 0.17 percent, to finish the morning break at 2,861.09.

The Shenzhen Component Index dipped 20.52 points, or 0.17 percent, to end the morning session at 12,049.89.
