Singapore shares close 0.7 pct lower ahead of new year

The shares prices on Singapore Exchange closed lower on Friday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) down 22.42 points, or 0.7 percent at 3,190.04.

During the half-day session ahead of the New Year, a total 667. 4 million shares changed hands on a market turnover of 689.6 million Singapore dollars (530.5 million U.S. dollars).

Gainers led losers by 205 to 178, while 951 others remained unchanged.

The STI index recently broke through the mark of 3,200 points but retreated on Friday as investors remained cautious ahead of the holiday.

The STI index increased 292.42 points, or 10.09 percent, over the past year, after gaining 64.5 percent in 2009 following the global financial crisis.
