The value of Hong Kong's total exports and imports of goods recorded year-on-year increases of 16. 6 percent and 16.4 percent in November, said the statistical authority on Tuesday.

The Census & Statistics Department of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said the month saw the value of total exports of goods, comprising re-exports and domestic exports, rise 16.6 percent over a year earlier to 273 billion Hong Kong dollars (35 billion U.S. dollars) after a year- on-year increase of 13.9 percent in October.

The authority said the performance of merchandise exports held up well in November, continuing to show significant year-on-year growth despite the higher base of comparison in the same period last year. This largely reflected the strong demand in regional markets.

Within this total, the value of re-exports rose 16.7 percent to 266.7 billion HK dollars in November, while the value of domestic exports rose 15.1 percent to 6.4 billion HK dollars.

Concurrently, the value of imports of goods rose 16.4 percent over a year earlier to 296.6 billion HK dollars, after a year-on- year increase of 14 percent in October. A visible trade deficit of 23.5 billion HK dollars, equivalent to 7.9 percent of the value of imports of goods, was recorded.

For the year's first 11 months, the value of total exports of goods rose 23.8 percent over the same period last year. Within this total, the value of re-exports rose 23.9 percent while the value of domestic exports grew 20 percent. Concurrently, the value of imports of goods increased by 26.1 percent. A visible trade deficit of 290.5 billion HK dollars was recorded for the period. ( One U.S. dollar equals 7.781 Hong Kong dollars.)
