French Car Sales Federation (CCFA) announced Friday car sales of 210,000 units in June across France, down by 12.6 percent from the previous year.

However, the figure displayed an upward trend on a monthly basis. A sale of 197,784 units were recorded in May, up from 169,451 in April, according to the federation.

Year on year, sales of the country's domestic brands shrunk by 17.9 percent over the period while foreign brands fell by 5.1 percent.

PSA Peugeot Citroen car manufacturer group saw its sales down by 8.2 percent from a year before after registering 70,221 new orders in June, while Renault, France's No. 2 car manufacturer, reported a 29.3 percent decrease in its sales of new cars.

French home-made brands took 55.13 percent of the auto market. With 12.06 percent of the market share, Germany's Volkswagen took the lead among foreign competitors such as GM, TOYOTA, BMW and Mercedes.

France once used a scrapping scheme offering 1,000 euros (1,484 US dollars) for each 10-year-old car, to help the business coping with the recession in the wake of the 2008-2009 financial crisis. The public aid ended on Dec. 31 2010.

Following the end of the scheme, car sales declined year-on-year from last June to this May.

Nevertheless, CCFA Chairman Patrick Blain said the French auto-market is recovering to the pre-crisis level due to its stimulus policy.
