The European Union (EU) Thursday welcomed ruling of the World Trade Organization (WTO) which found that Boeing had received billions of illegal subsides from the U.S. government.

The WTO panel report published on Thursday ruled that the U.S. government granted illegal subsidies to Boeing amounting to at least 5.3 million U.S. dollars and planned future subsides are estimated to be worth between three to four billion dollars, according to the European Commission.

"This WTO Panel report clearly shows that Boeing has received huge subsidies in the past and continues to receive significant subsidies today," European Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht said in a statement.

"These subsidies have resulted in substantial harm to EU interests, causing Airbus to lose sales, depress its aircraft prices and unfairly lose market share to Boeing. The detrimental costs to EU industry from this lengthy and onerous subsidization run into billions of euro," he added.

The commissioner called on the U.S. government to take appropriate measures to achieve "a mutually agreed solution to the dispute."

Since October 2004, the EU and the U.S. have been involved in a dispute, accusing each other of providing illegal state support to their respective aerospace industries. A WTO ruling last year found that Airbus also received billions of illegal state subsides and the EU has appealed against the ruling.
