London stock market makes strong debut in new year

London stock market made a strong debut in the new year on Tuesday with the leading FTSE 100 index up by 99.67 points or 1.69 percent to 5,999.61 points in early trade.

Energy shares rose with oil prices at nearly two-year highs. Banks were also among the early risers, with Royal Bank of Scotland up 4.9 percent.
