The European Central Bank said Thursday it would double its subscribed capital due to greater volatility in financial markets and interest rates, as well as heightened credit risks.

A statement said the bank would increase subscribed capital to 10.76 billion euros in three stages over the next two years, a total rise of 5 billion euros ($6.6 billion).
