Peru has positive prospects for employment growth in 2010 due to its economic growth in the previous year, a European Union (EU) official in charge of employment said here Wednesday.

"Peru resisted quite well during the crisis. But the big question is what will happen later, and it depends on how the world economy develops. So far, Peru is facing a positive situation in 2010," said Xavier Prats Monne, director of the Directorate General for Employment and Social Affairs of the European Commission.

Monne, speaking after participating in the EU, Latin American and Caribbean Forum on Social Cohesion, said the EU has high expectations for Peru because it is one of the few nations that successfully withstood the negative cycle of the global economy.

He said all nations have a common concern, which is to prevent young people from losing their jobs, praising Peru for making the employment of its youth a priority.

"This is certainly a positive thing," he said.
