Russia's grain output totals 97 mln tons in 2009

The total grain output of Russia in 2009 declined by 10.3 percent year-on-year to 97 million tons, Russia's Federal State Statistic Service said on Monday.

Preliminary statistics showed that the outputs of various kinds of grain including barley, oat, corn and buckwheat have all declined over the past year, with the wheat output down 2 million metric tons to 61.7 million tons. But the rice output increased 170,000 tons to 908,000 tons.

Figures also showed that the total area for grain growing in Russia increased 80,000 hectares to 47.5 million hectares last year, as compared with 2008. The country's grain reserves also increased 2.3 percent, or 1.1 million tons, to 49.4 million tons.

The year of 2008 had seen a record grain harvest of 108 million tons in Russia.
