London stock market down sharply in early trading

The London stock market declined sharply in early trade on Wednesday with the FTSE 100 index down by 66.36 points, or 1.24 percent, at 5,298.45 points soon after opening.

Shares in financial and insurance firms were down in the early trade despite the utility firms rose after water regulator Ofwat issued its latest price ruling. Shares in London Stock Exchange Group and Interserve dropped by more than 5 percent in the early morning trade.
