French supermarket Carrefour recorded a loss of 58 million euros (about 83 million U.S. dollars) in the first half of 2009, the company said Friday.
The world's second largest retailer said in a statement that it had an operating profit of 1.01 billion euros (1.45 billion dollars) in the six months of 2009, down 27.6 percent from a year ago.
"In a challenging environment, Carrefour posts resilient first half sales and market share gains, notably in France," CEO Lars Olofsson said." We are on track to deliver our 2009 objectives, execute our transformation plan and make Carrefour the preferred retailer."
Carrefour expected a full year profit of 2.7 billion to 2.8 billion euros (3.9 billion to 4.0 billion dollars).
