The London stock market retained its upward trend by midday on Friday, encouraged by the performance of mining shares.

The FTSE 100 index was up 117.18 points, or 2.84 percent, at 4238.29 by 1200 GMT.

Mining firm Xstrata led the gainers by adding 10.29 percent in its shares, followed by Rio Tinto, up 9.99 percent. Aquarius Platinum Ld also went up by 8.50 percent as mineral prices bounced back.

Travel firms were among the losers with Tui Travel down 2.74 percent, and Ent.Inns down 3.91 percent.
