Retail sales in Brazil up 11% in first 10 months of 2010

Retail sales in Brazil increased 11.4 percent in the first 10 months of 2010, compared with the same period last year, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) said Tuesday.

The IBGE said retail sales were up 2.1 percent in October compared with September, and 11.2 percent higher compared with the same period last year. In the November 2009 to October 2010 period, sales were up 12 percent from the previous 12-month period.

All ten sectors included in the IBGE study registered an increase in sales in the first 10 months of the year. The highest increases were registered in the computer supplies sector (24.4 percent), furniture and domestic appliances (18.1 percent), and construction supplies (15.6 percent).

The income generated by retail sales rose two percent in October compared with September and 14.2 percent compared with October 2009. In the first 10 months of the year, the retail sales income registered an increase of 14.1 percent, and from November 2009 to October 2010, 14.3 percent.

The highest increase in sales income was registered in construction supplies (20.4 percent), furniture and domestic appliances (19.7 percent), and clothing and shoes (16.6 percent).
