In such small cities like Bell, city mayor is elected among the five council members and the mayor, vice mayor and council members are working part time. In most cities, mayors and other city council members earn between 250 dollars and 500 dollars, with 400 dollars as the average for each month.

However, in the City of Bell, the average annual pay for city council members is 100,000 dollars.

Residents of the city did not know that their city officials are fat cats before the Los Angeles Times did a story earlier this month. The news has irritated local residents and drawn national attention.

The Monday (July 19) night regular city council meeting became a scene of protests. Angry residents held signs and shouted slogans to demand the resignation of the city manager and city council members.

To the disappointment of the residents, the city council made no decision to fire the city manager or ask him to resign. Citing legal concerns, the city council ordered a staff report on city salaries.

Outside the meeting hall, people were collecting signatures demanding an audit of all city hall finances. Also, people are calling for a recall of the city officials.

Bell is being investigated by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office over the compensation of its city council members.
