Operation of Brazil's second largest port suspended

The operation of Brazil's second largest port was suspended on Thursday by the federal environmental management body for breach of environmental legislation.

According to the Brazilian Environmental Institute (Ibama), the management of Paranagua port failed to meet the environmental regularization commitments it has previously signed.

The decision of suspending the port operation was announced by Ibama President Abelardo Bayma.

The port of Paranagua, located in the southern state of Parana, is Brazil's largest port for shipment of grains and its second biggest maritime terminal.

The port started the process of environmental adjustment in 2002 and signed with the authorities a term of engagement in 2009, which was not fulfilled.

The administration of the terminal failed to meet the deadline to deliver the documents to prepare environmental studies and emergency plans, said Ibama, the government body responsible for environment protection.

In May, a court in Brazil granted a grace period of 30 days for the document delivery, but the port administration sent incomplete versions of the required documents, which were returned by the state agency for further improvement.

However, the port management failed to fulfill the requirement again.
