Brazil registered in April an unemployment rate of 7.3 percent, the lowest monthly rate since 2002, the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) reported Thursday.

The April figure fell from the 7.6 percent in March, the first decrease in the unemployment rate so far this year. In April 2009, the unemployment rate was 8.3 percent.

The unemployed population in the country totaled 1.7 million in April, stable when compared with that in March and down 16.4 percent from the same period last year.

Meanwhile, the employed population totaled 21.8 million, also stable when compared with the figure in March, but up 4.3 percent from the same period in 2009.

The average salaries paid to workers amounted to 1,424 reais (778 U.S. dollars) in April, roughly the same figures registered in March and up 2.3 percent from the same period last year.

The average per capita household income in the country totaled 930 reais (508 dollars) in April, down 0.4 percent from March and up 2.4 percent from April 2009.

The emerging giant's economy is already on a path of rapid recovery, as the IMF predicts a 7 percent growth for this year.
