U.S. stocks were flat on Thursday as the number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits and the ISM services composite index both fell.

The number of Americans filing first-time claims for unemployment benefits unexpectedly fell last week to the lowest level in more than a year, a sign companies are holding on to workers as the economic recovery unfolds.

Meanwhile, the U.S. services sector contracted in November, with the index measuring activity falling to its lowest reading since July, according to a report released on Thursday.

Shares of Bank of America Corp. were up more than 3 percent after the company said late Wednesday that it's going to repay 45 billion U.S. dollars of Troubled Asset Relief Program funds.

The Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.01 percent, while the S&P 500 rose 0.03 percent and the Nasdaq composite rose 0.31 percent.
