The Brazilian Revenue Service has recently announced an operation, initiated in the state of Sao Paulo, to combat tax evasion from 10,000 upscale buildings in gated condominiums, resorts and mountain regions.

The revenue service said Wednesday that these taxpayers owe the government around 1,500 million reais (around 900 million dollars),referring to social welfare contribution to the employees who have worked to build the mansions.

According to the service, owners who do not clear the debts will be exposed to fiscal control and pay fines equal to 75 percent of the debts.

The operation is initiated in Sao Paulo and may be extended to the other parts of the country.

Thousands of large mansions, mainly built in the mountain areas and beach regions in Sao Paulo, have no registration at all of social welfare contribution, authorities said.
