AT&T profit declines in third quarter

AT&T Inc.'s net income declined in the third quarter of 2009 as revenue from landlines fell, the largest U.S. telecommunications provider said on Thursday.

The company earned 3.19 billion U.S. dollars, or 54 cents per share, from July through September, down 1.2 percent from the same period a year earlier.

Revenue fell 1.6 percent to 30.9 billion dollars as the company lost nearly 1 million home phone lines in the quarter.

In the wireless sector, which generates most of AT&T's profit, it added 2 million wireless subscribers in the third quarter. The company also reported 3.2 million iPhone activation for the quarter.

Shares of AT&T rose 1.81 percent, or 47 cents, to 26.42 dollars on the New York Stock Exchange.
