Crude futures closed above 117 U.S. dollars a barrel for the first time Monday due to supply concerns.

In Nigeria, a key producer of high-quality light crude, about 169,000 barrels a day of crude production was shut in following an attack on a pipeline operated by Shell Petroleum Development Co.

Light, sweet crude for May delivery was up 79 cents at a record 117.48 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

June Brent crude on the ICE futures exchange in London was up 51 cents to 114.43 dollars a barrel.
