Japan's wholesale prices rose 2.5 percent in April on year from a month earlier, marking the fifth straight month of increase, the Bank of Japan (BOJ) said on Monday.

The 2.5 percent rise in the recording period follows a 2.0 percent increase logged in March and beat median market forecasts for a 2.1 percent annual increase and as with the previous month, Japan's central bank cited higher commodity prices such as crude oil and nonferrous metals as pushing wholesale prices up in the recording period.

Japan's central bank reported that export prices rose 2.2 percent on month but fell 3.0 percent on year, while import prices climbed 5.5 percent on month and surged 9.1 percent on year, the data revealed.

On a monthly basis, the central bank reported, the corporate good price index, a gauge of corporate charges for services and goods, gained 0.9 percent in April compared to a 0.6 percent rise logged a month earlier.
