These include handicrafts, cultural and heritage tourism, Thai traditional medicine, Thai food, performing arts, music, design, fashion and architecture.

NESDB has said in 2006, creative economy contributed 10.8 percent to the GDP, with an export value of 289 billion baht (9.63 billion dollars).

"It can be seen that developing creative economy will be a solution in dealing with current global economy,"a statement released at the seminar said.

The government has set up a national creative economy policy committee chaired by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, with Alongkorn as the secretary general.

A Thailand creative economy agency has also been set up with Pajchima as the head.

Creative economy institutions specializing in 10 different industries have also been set up with cooperation from universities.

In giving some examples of how to build up cultural and heritage tourism, Alongkorn said the government is beautifying Bangkok with the aim to re-decorate both riverbanks of Chao Phraya River, the country's main life blood, which passes through the capital.

He said all key bridges crossing the Chao Phraya will also be artistically repainted with the help of Silpakorn University, known for its expertise in fine arts.

Coining the project as "Creative Chao Phraya", Alongkorn said the government wanted to turn the capital into a "creative city" in hope to make it one of the most attractive cities for tourists to visit in the world.Source:Xinhua
