Japan TV sales soar as eco point program close to end

Walk into an electronics store in Japan and you may be met with some very long lines. No, it's not Christmas come early to electronics companies, it's the government's Eco Point program.

It provides subsidies for eco-friendly home appliances and it seems everyone wants a piece before the promotion ends.

Customers arrive early to try to beat the line-ups before Eco Point is halved. Eco Point was introduced in May last year and is a subsidy program for consumers of energy-efficient products. Last month, the Japanese government announced the subsidy would be halved in December.

One customer said "I'm very surprised to see such a long line."

Flat-screen televisions, in particular, are in high demand. Sales during the second week of November increased six fold from the same period last year. Many stores are already sold out of popular models.

Timohiro Arita, Vice Manager of Electronics Store said "This is the type of thing to happen once in 10 years. We increased our staff to handle all these customers."

One Japanese appliance company, Mitsubishi Electronics, cannot keep up with the high demand even though it boosted production by 3 and a half times from last year.

Makoto Narumi, TV Department Manager of Mitsubishi Factory, Kyoto said "We have never seen such a demand in the whole history of color TVs."

Other major manufacturers have also cut short holiday days and increased workers' overtime. The boost is expected to trail off by the end of next March when the Eco Point Program finally finishes.Unicom issues new rules to limit iphone reselling.
