Summary of APEC SME Summit

APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC) pays high attention on the development of SMEs, and advocated to organize "ABAC SME Summit" commence on 2007 with the aims of promoting the communication among SMEs in Asia-pacific region, increasing government's attention on SMEs, releasing the energy of SMEs and driving the sustainable development of regional economy. The first ABAC SME Summit was held in Melbourne, Australia, in August 2007. In 2009, APEC authorized ABAC to formally upgrade the summit as "APEC SME Summit", and strives to establish a most influential international SME conference brand in Asia-Pacific region. Till the beginning of the year 2010, ABAC has organized the summit seven times in five APEC member economies. China organized twice in Hangzhou in 2008 and 2009 respectively, and both achieved great success.

  On August 2nd to 3rd 2008, the 2nd ABAC SME Summit, jointly organized by CCPIT, ABAC, the People's Municipal Government of Hangzhou and Alibaba Group, was held at Hangzhou People's Great Hall. Around 250 ABAC delegates and accompanying persons from 21 APEC member economies, and over 3000 SME entrepreneur representatives, top business figures, senior government officials and excellent SME owners attended the summit. This summit achieved great success, and "ABAC's Declaration on Small and Medium-sized Enterprises' (SME) Development (Hangzhou-Lima Declaration)", which aims to release the vitality of SMEs and to promote the sustainable economic development in Asia-Pacific region. Also, the formal consulting proposal on how government can promote the development of local SMEs was drafted.

  On September 11th to 12th 2009, 2009 APEC SME Summit, founded by ABAC, jointly organized by CCPIT, Singapore Business Federation, the People's Municipal Government of Hangzhou and Alibaba Group, supported by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), was successfully held in Hangzhou, China. With the theme of "Small Enterprises, Big Dreams", discussing the issues covering the capital, talent, management and brand of SMEs, this summit was striving to provide actual assistance to SMEs in current pivotal period during economic recovery. More than 3500 SME representatives, government officials and various experts from 21 APEC member economies attended the summit. Besides, this summit attracted over 400 media on live report including 70 overseas media. Also, around 100,000 SME representatives attended the related activities including sourcing fair and E-Businessmen Conference.

  APEC SME Summit, one of the most important achievements as China's participation in APEC cooperation, has received high appreciation and support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. We will continue our focus on promoting the development of SMEs, and endeavor to build the summit as No. 1 brand of SME international conference in Asia-pacific region.
