Singapore's inflation reached new high this year with the consumer price index (CPI) increased by 3.7 percent in September compared to a year ago, official data showed on Monday.

Following the 3.3 percent year-on-year increase in August, the September CPI figure was a result of higher costs of transport, housing and food, the Singapore Department of Statistics said.

Higher prices of cars and car insurance premium contributed to the 9.1 percent rise in the cost of transport.

Housing cost advanced by 4.7 percent resulting from higher accommodation costs and electricity tariffs.

Food prices rose by 1.7 percent, arising from dearer prepared meals, vegetables, fresh seafood, rice & other cereals, dairy products & eggs as well as chilled meat.

The CPI in the first nine months of this year went up by 2.4 percent compared with the same period in 2009.

On a month-on-month basis, the CPI in September 2010 edged up by 0.1 percent over the previous month.
