The declaration was made by President Yudhoyono during the apex of 2010 Sail Banda marine event held in Maluku province's capital city of Ambon.

According to the president, Maluku province had a big fish production of up to 1.64 million ton per year. He added that the government would provide full support for people in Maluku in developing the fishery industry in their province.

"Maluku has a big fishery potential for the national welfare and therefore I fully support the province's efforts to be a national fish barn," President Yudhoyono was quoted by the Antara news service as saying.

Maluku province has 600,000 square km of water area with extensive marine resources that can be used by locals to support their lives and develop the region's economy, the presided said.
