Nikkei closes up on robust corporate earnings reports

Nikkei edged higher Monday as optimism spurred by robust earnings reports from Japanese companies lifted the market.

The 225-issue benchmark Nikkei index ended up 33.01 points, or 0.35 percent, from Friday at 9,570.31, trimming earlier gains that had sent the index more than 1 percent higher.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 1.19 points, or 0.14 percent, at 850. 69.

Trading volume on the main section came to 1,748.36 million shares, down from Friday's 2,116.40 million.

The TSE's Second Section index lost 0.73 point, or 0.03 percent, to 2,134.86 on a volume of 15.87 million shares. On the Osaka Securities Exchange, the near-term September Nikkei 225 index futures contract was up 30 points to 9,560.
