Nikkei closes 2.43 pct higher

Tokyo stocks closed sharply higher Monday with the key Nikkei index leaping 2.43 percent.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 Average surged 242.99 points to 10,238. 01, a fresh closing high since May 18 when it hit 10.242.64. The broader Topix index was up 17.85 points, or 2.02 percent, to 902. 49.

Trading volume on the main section expanded to 1,771.07 million shares from 1,555.13 million Friday.

On the first section advancing shares beat declining ones with 1,469 to 141.
